Workshop: Academic Writing in English
English: Thursday, 20 October 2022, 17.15–19.15
English is on everyone’s lips, but what distinguishes English as a scientific
language from German and French, for example? This workshop explores
language-specific writing in English through practical exercises (sentence
structure, active/passive, use of the first and third person, punctuation, etc.). It
provides stringent writing principles as a basis for answering a crucial question:
“How best to produce written academic English that sounds English and is
acceptable to first-language readers?”

Workshop: Avoiding Plagiarism:
English: Spring semester 2023, 17.15–19.15
The best way to avoid plagiarism is to understand what it is. This requires understanding the purpose of academic research and writing. This workshop therefore explores how to correctly deal with and incorporate sources into one’s own work (quotation, paraphrasing, summarising). It shows that taking proper notes, correct citation and a heightened sense of awareness about the research process are the most effective ways of avoiding plagiarism (intentional and careless) and thus of safeguarding academic integrity.
