"ASK YOUR PROF" Series:
Students from both the BIA and MIA programmes have the opportunity to ask the questions they want to ask about varied topics in the modern world. No lecture, no slides instead we present an open forum for students to lead the conversations they want to have.

The International Affairs Programme welcomed Prof. Charles Kupchan for an „Ask your Prof“ session on 7 June 2021 about the meaning behind the most recent developments in Israel and Palestine. Over 50 students discussed this complex and relevant conflict with Professor Kupchan, a profound expert of the region and author of “How Enemies Become Friends” (2021, Princeton University Press).
The topic was suggested by MIA student Jana Wörner, who wrote her Bachelor thesis on the US-Israel relations and also moderated the event. This is what she writes about the discussion:
“It was a unique opportunity for us students to ask questions that many of us have difficulties to find satisfactory answers for. Particularly insightful was also to hear about the connections Charles Kupchan made to developments, like illiberalism and anti-Semitism, and how he reads the new government, which is expected to be the first in more than 40 years to include an Arab party, the Islamist Ra’am party. One of his key messages was to remain hopeful despite the challenges and developments we face at the state and global levels.”
Prof. Charles Kupchan is Professor of International Affairs at Georgetown University and Senior Fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations. He is also Honorary Doctorate of the University of St. Gallen in honour of his outstanding research and his achievements concerning the promotion of global stability through an international order based on democratic values, human rights and binding rules. In both the Obama and the Clinton administrations, he served on the National Security Council. Charles Kupchan stands out for a lifetime of committed engagement with the hard questions of how to avoid war and promote lasting peace.
